Capitol Park and Lagoon
There are several parks in the City of Smiles, but the Capitol Park and Lagoon, at the heart of Bacolod, with its lush greens and magnificent view, remain a perennial favorite destination of both local and foreign visitors.
What to See
The site itself covers over 3 hectares, making it one of the largest in the city. Among the major scenic attractions that you can find at the park are the Paghimud-os sculptures. These splendid artworks were the creation of Ed Castrillo, one of the finest local sculptors and artists in Negros Occidental. Other sculptors who contributed were Guillermo Tolentino and Francisco Monti.
One of the most striking of the many sculptures there are the carabaos on the north and south end of the lagoon, the one on the north having a woman in front drawing the creature, while on the south side it is a man.
Another popular attraction at the Capitol Park and Lagoon is the sight of the vintage Capitol building. The edifice is well loved by the tourists for its striking architectural design. There is also a beautiful lagoon around it. This pool of water is man made and its brilliantly turquoise color complements the entire scenery. When you are at the park you will also get to see some people going out for their morning jogs, or perhaps taking a break and eating at the restaurants nearby.
Strolling around the park you will also get to witness people performing dance routines for the schools, as well as residents practicing martial arts or Tai Chi. Some meanwhile, just relax by hovering near the lagoon. You will also see families and friends gathering here for weekend picnics. The site is also known for its free musical shows featuring bands.
